Tim Tams - Australian Chocolate Biscuits

Nov 07, 2007 by Visual Recipes | Filed in Spotlight on Food | 7 Comments

A friend in Australia sent me a box full of treats. In the box were Tim Tams and they taste amazing.

What are Tim Tams? - Tim Tams are chocolate Biscuits made by Arnott’s Biscuits in Australia. A Tim Tam consists of light chocolate cream filling sandwiched between two chocolate malted biscuits, and all coated with a thin layer of textured chocolate.  Tim Tams were first introduced in 1964.

Tim Tam Slam - The Tim Tam Slam is a name for the popular method of eating Tim Tams where a person bites both ends of the biscuit and then uses the modified biscuit as a straw to suck up a hot liquid such as tea, coffee, or hot milo. Right before the biscuit falls apart from melting the person plops the biscuit in their mouth to enjoy.

Why the name Tim Tam? -  Ross Arnott, attended the 1958 Kentucky Derby in the USA and decided to use the name of the winning horse, Tim Tim, as the name of his new planned line of biscuits.

How popular are Tim Tams?  - 35 million packs are sold each year, approximately 4oo million biscuits, or 1.7 packs per Australian.

Are they available in the USA? - Yes, Click Here to Purchase Them From Amazon

Actually, I found Tim Tams at a Target in America once. I thought they were delicious. I haven’t looked in that Target to find them since, so I’m not sure if they’re still there, but it’s worth a try if you ever want them!

Arnott’s gave Pepperidge Farm a limited license to make and distribute Tim Tams in America. You should be able to find them at Target stores, next to the Milano Cookies, and the like. I am delighted to find Tim Tams in America- I was missing them since I moved back from Australia. The Tim Tam Slam is the greatest treat!

Long before Arnott’s started making these biscuits, my Mum and I used to make these biscuits nearly every weekend.  That’s back in the 1950’s.. They were made with Morning Coffee biscuits layered on a bed of chocolate, then covered with more melted chocolate and then another Morning Coffee biscuit, followed by more melted chocolate. The whole suburb we lived in were making these biscuits back in the 50’s.
Arnott’s took it to a whole new level.
