Cheddar cheese is traditional for making a grilled cheese sandwich, but we also made sandwiches with swiss, camembert, and blue cheese. Mixing 2 or 3 cheeses together makes an interesting grilled cheese sandwich.

We also used different breads, like raisin bread. You can also add other things like ham or sliced apples. Olive oil makes a good substitution for the butter. Great quick lunch or snack.

  • 2 slices bread per person
  • 1 Tablespoon butter can substitute olive oil
  • 1 to 2 ounces cheddar cheese (or other favorite)

Step 1

Heat a heavy frying pan over medium-high heat.

Step 2

Spread 1/2 Tbsp. butter on one side of each slice of bread.

Step 3

Stack the bread with buttered sides together.

Step 4

Put cheese on bread in an even layer.

Step 5

Put slice of bread with cheese into pan, butter side down. Top with second slice, butter side up.

Step 6

Cook until bread becomes brown; flip sandwich over.

Step 7

Cook until second side is brown.

Step 8

Put sandwich on place; cut, if desired. Enjoy your grilled cheese sandwich!. (Be sure to turn off stove)
